Hey everyone, I'm David Laird and I am thrilled to welcome you to Columbia SC. I’m not originally from here, but it’s a city I call home thanks to great friends, a beautiful wife, and endless way to explore. I hope you enjoy your time in our shared city.

Long before the James Beard Foundation awarded Lula Drake with the best wine bar in the South, attention was given to Spotted Salamander, a charming lunch spot winning locals' hearts with their creative deviled eggs and classic, modern takes on cakes. Local art covers the walls, and each table has its own salt + pepper shaker collected by owner/chef Jessica Shillato.

Insider Tip: Be sure to save room for other James Beard-nominated favorites including City Grit and Kiki’s Chicken and Waffles. A personal favorite is the 10:00 AM tailgating at City Limits BBQ, an experience unrivaled anywhere in the area

As the capital city, Columbia is the home to some remarkable history. We’re fortunate to have Historic Columbia preserving our historic homes and serving as a gathering place where the stories of all our past neighbors are uplifted. A stroll through the gardens is recommended following a heavy lunch at Spotted Salamander.

The culture of any city can easily be described through its appreciation of books. Ed’s Edition is the perfect place to find that rare, out-of-print book to add to your collection. With a carefully curated selection continually updated from across the Southeast, you’ll be sure to find something special each time you visit. Any good bookstore has a house cat – Solo just might greet you at Ed’s. For a newer title and community events, All Good Books is a fantastic addition to the Five Points district.

Insider Tip: Columbia is home to internationally acclaimed poet Nikki Giovanni, 2023 Pen/Faulkner debut novel award winner Claire Jimeniz and James Dickey, heralded author of Deliverance, as well as poems such as The Starry Place Between the Skies and many other stories.

We are more than quiet history tours, acclaimed bistros, bookstores, and worth-the-wait BBQ. Columbia can turn it up, too. From nationally touring acts to local bands, the area is a hot spot for live music. Catch a show at the recently relocated New Brookland Tavern in Five Points for a diverse array of music.

Insider Tip: After the show, head next door to Bar None for an order of cheese fries. Some say they have magical powers after a night out.

Columbia is a place grounded in fresh beginnings. Go discover your new favorite spot. We’d be excited to see you there!
