"We are thrilled to be celebrating our 10th year," said Willie Jeffries, Collegiate Hall of Fame Football Coach and Executive Director of the Classic. "This game brings together so many individuals within and outside of our community, and I believe this year's success will be our best by far."
This year is the first for a team to be invited by the Classic committee from the state of Virginia. Some of the past years opponents include, Johnson C. Smith, Livingstone, Savannah State and Morehouse.
Located in Richmond, Virginia Union University is a member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and boasts two CIAA football championships. The Panthers are led by Head Coach Michael Bailey.
Benedict Tigers, led by Head Coach Stan Conner, have won five of the last six Palmetto Capital City Classic games.
"More than anything we want visitors to know this event is more than a football game; it's an experience," added Jeffries.
Some of the other events surrounding the game include the Jazz in the City concert, the Palmetto Capital City Class golf tournament, a low country broil and Beaufort stew party, a pre-game parade as well as a pre-game Hip Hop party. For more information on events and tickets, visit palmettoccc.com.
