- (April 5, 2011) The
Palmetto200 will begin its 200-mile overnight
relay run in Columbia, S.C. on Friday, April 8, 2011. The relay
will start at Historic Columbia Speedway and finish at Folly Beach,
just outside of Charleston.
Palmetto200 teams will begin the race starting at 6:00 a.m. on Friday. Start
times are staggered based upon each team's estimated finish time. Teams are expected to reach the finish line at
Folly Beach starting at noon on Saturday and
continuing to arrive throughout the day.
Over 550 runners will make up 53 teams that will run the relay. Each team is
comprised of two to 12 members who will run the 200-mile course divided into 36
segments. Runners will complete between three and 18 segments depending on the
team size. One segment ranges four to 10 miles. Vans will drop off and pick up
runners at designated exchange points along the route.
Participating runners may race competitively or just for fun. Awards will be
given in both team categories. Competitive awards include Fastest Full Team,
those with seven to 12 runners, and Fastest Ultra Team, those with six or fewer.
Other awards include Best Team Costume, Best Lit Team and the Survivor Award.
