Columbia Choral Society

The Columbia Choral Society is a volunteer professional chorus of auditioned singers. It is a member organization of the Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington Counties and Chorus America.

History/About: In 1930 a community chorus contest was held in Columbia as part of the annual Community Chest Drive. The winning chorus organized as the Shandon Choral Society, and later changed its name to Columbia Choral Society. The purpose of the organization, then, as it is now, was to stimulate and broaden interest in musical activities and to actively engage in the rehearsal and rendition of choral music. The group grew from about 40 voices to over 100 within a few years.
