Job Title: Engineering Assistant, Emphasis in HVAC 
Job Type: Full-time, non-exempt (hourly)
Salary: $15.38 to $21.63 /hour, contingent on experience
 
I. Position Summary:
 
The Engineering Assistant is to provide assistance to the Enigneering Director in the area of maintenance to maintain the Convention Center’s systems such as the HVAC, electrical, lighting, data, phone, sound equipment, and plumbing. The Engineering Assistant will also make repairs to any damage on the doors, walls, and floors in the Convention Center. The Engineering Department will supply individuals using the facility with utility services and will connect electrical equipment when needed.
 
II. Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for inspecting HVAC/refrigeration systems and their components for the purpose of evaluating condition, identifying necessary repairs, as well as recommending and/or performing preventive maintenance to ensure the ongoing function of the systems.
  • Responsible for repairing HVAC/refrigeration systems and/or components in a timely manner to minimize downtime.
  • Responsible for installing HVAC/refrigeration equipment and systems for the purpose of providing enhanced and/or upgraded capabilities.
  • Responsible for assisting and maintaining maintenance records on Convention Center equipment.
  • Responsible for assisting with performing a maintenance program on all equipment.
  • Responsible for providing meeting managers and exhibitors with utility services.
  • Responsible for the repair of the building and grounds.
  • All other duties as assigned. 

III. Skills:

  • Must be able to work scheduled shifts based on department needs.
  • Must be competent at troubleshooting refrigeration systems, air distribution systems, electrical wiring, and equipment controls.
  • Must be able to operate equipment and tools used in the installation, repair, and maintenance of HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
  • Must be able to safely handle hazardous materials.
  • Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions or manuals, blueprints, and be able to calculate figures and take measurements.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Good communication skills are required.
  • Must be able to problem solve and have the ability to develop and recommend solutions.
  • Must be able to interact with people from various backgrounds. 

IV. Education/Qualifications Required:

  • Must have at least 3 years of experience as a HVAC/refrigeration service and/or maintenance technician.
  • Must have EPA Type I and II or Universal Certification.
  • Previous facility maintenance experience preferred. Any trades certifications a plus.
  • Must have remodeling experience or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Must have a valid SC Driver’s License.
  • Specific knowledge of the following are a plus:
  • Repair and maintenance of walk-in freezers and coolers
  • Repair and maintenance of reach-in freezers and coolers
  • Repair and maintenance of ice machines

  • Plumbing trades certifications a plus, but will accept experience in residential and commercial work in lieu of license.

  • Must have a valid SC Driver’s License.
