Memorial Day Weekend in Columbia SC may look a little different this year, but there are several ways to celebrate while social distancing. Here are some fun ways to spend the first unofficial holiday of the summer season.

On the Water

Spend the holiday experiencing one of Columbia SC’s many waterways by boat, kayak or along walking trails. Palmetto Outdoor Center is open for tube and kayak rentals. Float downstream for three miles, or see the rare Rocky Shoals Spider Lily on the Spider Lily Kayak tour. Explore the 650 miles of shoreline on Lake Murray with a boat rental, or head down to the Cayce Riverwalk Park to engage in waterside recreation along the more than three miles of paths and boardwalks running along the Congaree River.

In the Kitchen

What’s better than a Memorial Day barbecue? Not having to lift a finger to prepare the food. From pimento cheese to pasta salad; pork chops to vegan ribs, Columbia’s restaurants have you covered. Spotted Salamander is keeping their take-and-make cooler stocked with favorites like pimento cheese, BLT pasta salad, chicken and dumplings, chicken salad, caramelized onion and bacon dip and more. Or grab a grazing box from Honey River Catering, who is also offering sweet tea brined and packaged Carolina Heritage Farms Pork Chops that come ready to grill with peach chutney! Drool. For a vegan twist, take home crispy fried “chicken” minis and drumsticks, BBQ “spareribs” and “chicken” strips in family sizes from A Peace of Soul Vegan Kitchen. We've all missed Fireflies Baseball this season, but their ballpark bites are for sale with touch-less delivery. Go ahead and fill your cart with their famous hotdogs and hamburgers.

For a list of local restaurants with takeout, outdoor and indoor dining options, check out the restaurant updates on the Experience Columbia SC website.

In Memory

Remember our fallen soldiers with a visit to Memorial Park. Located on Hampton Street, the park is a memorial to 980 South Carolinians who died in Vietnam. It also has monuments honoring the USS Columbia warship and those that served with her during WWII; the China-Burma-India Theater Veterans of WWII; casualties of the Pearl Harbor attack of December 7, 1941; a Holocaust monument; and a Korean War Memorial.
